Mount Holly Homes for Sale

Mount Holly is a small bedroom community nestled in the northeastern part of Gaston County approximately sixteen miles from Uptown Charlotte. Mount Holly is bordered by Interstate 85 to the south, and North Carolina State Highway 16 to the north, while the Catawba River is not far away to the east. The history surrounding Mount Holly starts at some point in the 1750s when King George II of Great Britain, issued several land grants, one of which went to a James Kuykendall, a native of Holland, in 1754. The land owned by Kuykendall became known as “Dutchman’s Creek.” In 1838, a post office was built in the area and named “Woodlawn.” As was the custom in those days, the area or town where a post office was built usually took the same name as the post office. Sometime later, a cotton mill was established in proximity to Woodlawn called Mount Holly Cotton Mill. According to historical records, the mill produced a high-quality yarn that was well-known to that specific area. It was decided to name the area Mount Holly in recognition of the Mount Holly Cotton Mill and its famed thread. This mill was the fourth mill to be established in the County of Gaston, as well as being the oldest mill still standing today. In 1879, the residents of Mount Molly petitioned the North Carolina General Assembly for Mount Holly’s incorporation, and due to the town’s success, was granted on March 11, 1879.
