Matthews Homes for Sale

In the 19th century, a community called Stumptown formed. It was named so because of a large number of tree stumps protruding from the ground, the result of cotton farmers clearing the way for their cotton fields. Later on, the community’s name changed to Fullwood, which was the name of a beloved postmaster in the area named John Miles Fullwood. Various industries moved to the area, such as a sawmill, cotton factories, and other farm-related businesses, which boosted Fullwood from a simple farming community to a full-fledged town. Fullwood also served as a stagecoach stop between Monroe and Charlotte, until the railroad built a line through the area in December 1874. As the town’s popularity grew, it was decided to incorporate it into a municipality at some point in 1879. During the process of incorporation, the town’s name changed to “Matthews” after Edward Watson Matthews, the director of the Central Carolina Railroad and notable resident of the area. Beyond this long and rich history, Matthews has much to offer prospective homebuyers.

Out of all the reasons to choose Matthews for your next home purchase, the natural beauty of the area, which can be enjoyed in various natural spaces, is a great reason. For example, the Congaree National Park located in Richland County near Eastover is an impressive destination. Furthermore, the Congaree National Park has some of the tallest trees growing in the eastern portion of the United States. In addition to its natural beauty, there are exciting entertainment and recreation opportunities in the area. Carowinds, a 400-acre amusement park featuring eight themed areas that include Celebration Plaza, Crossroads, Carolina Boardwalk, Carousel Park, County Fair, Thrill Zone, and Camp Snoopy, is one such place. Each area offers visitors numerous thrill rides of different levels for differing age groups. Other amenities include several Charlotte-area shopping centers, such as South Park, an upscale mall located at 4400 Sharon Road in Charlotte. South Park is home to Abercrombie & Fitch, Alex And Ani, American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, and much more. Some of the eateries available include California Pizza Kitchen, The Cheesecake Factory, Maggiano's Little Italy, McCormick & Schmick's, and Reid's Fine Foods & Wine Bar.
