Lake Wylie Homes for Sale

Lake Wylie is yet another pristine human-made lake roughly eighteen miles from Uptown Charlotte via I-77 north. It has a water surface area of approximately 13,400 acres in addition to boasting around 325 miles of beautiful shoreline. The lake was formed in 1904 to power the Catawba Dam and Power Plant located near the community of India Hook. The Catawba Dam impounded water from the Catawba River, creating Lake Catawba, which was the lake that supplied power plant. Over the years, the hydroelectric power station merged and changed ownership several times, finally joining with Duke Power Company in 1927. The final name change occurred in 1960 when it was changed to Wylie Hydroelectric Station in honor of W. Gil Wylie, one of the founders of the Catawba Power Company, the company that initially created the lake in the first place. Lake Wylie is part of both North and South Carolina, which attracts many residents from communities all around, including Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and Charlotte. Two small lake towns are located on Lake Wylie, one of which is named after the lake itself and another called Tega Cay.
