Davidson Homes for Sale

Davidson is a town situated approximately 21 miles north of Uptown Charlotte in Mecklenburg County on Lake Norman. It has roughly a population of 13,000. Founded in 1837, it was the site of the Presbyterian Davidson College, both of which were named after Brigadier General William Lee Davidson. Davidson was a militia general in the State of North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War and responsible for not allowing the British to cross the Catawba River. On February 1, 1781, Davidson was mortally wounded in the Battle of Cowan's Ford in Mecklenburg County. The history of the town can be directly linked to the establishment of Presbyterian Davidson College, which existed before the town and influenced its founding. The railroad played a small part in typifying the town’s character throughout the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, but it was mostly the presence of Davidson College that contributed to its unique style. The railroad also allowed Davidson to play an essential role in the region as a shipping point for cash crops like cotton, as well as a service center for farmers who lived nearby. In 1891, the town’s name was changed from “Davidson College” to “Davidson,” a symbolic move to show that it was more than a community surrounding a college.
