Stay up to date on the Cornelius market
Founded in 1883, Cornelius is the second youngest town to be incorporated in Mecklenburg County. During the colonial era, cotton had become one of the most prominent businesses in North Carolina. At some point in the late 19th century, two successful cotton companies located in the town of Davidson disagreed with the appointment of an official town cotton weigher. An election was held, and legislation was enacted in support of a town cotton weigher. The opposing cotton company chose to relocate to an area a little south Davidson. Since the roads were nothing but dirt back then, heavy rains would turn the road connecting cotton farmers to Davidson into thick mud. The farmers found it far more convenient to conduct their business in a small building a few kilometers south of Davidson, not far from the cotton company which had opposed the establishment of an official cotton weigher in the town of Davidson. This inspired the company to build a cotton mill nearby where raw cotton could be made into cloth. But the owners of the cotton company didn’t have enough money to build a mill. The owners approached a man named Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, who invested in the mill. Over time, a town grew up around the mill, and the residents, not forgetting Cornelius’ importance to its existence, named the town after him.
