Steele Creek is named after a small creek in the area that has the same name. The stream was named for a Scotch-Irish family who migrated to the area in the late 17th century. Formerly one of the first of fifteen townships of Mecklenburg County, it was initially designated as Steele Creek Township. When the North Carolina Legislature made revisions in laws governing how cities annex neighboring communities, it opened up new annexation opportunities of unincorporated communities without the permission of the residents inhabiting the area. Once the law was put in place, the City of Charlotte aggressively pursued annexation of any site that was not yet incorporated in a move to expand its borders. One of these unincorporated townships was Steele Creek. Though the region had long since been annexed, it remained mostly a rural space comprised of farms all the way until the 2000s. As significant projects were completed, such as the widening of NC 49, replacing the old, worn out Buster Boyd Bridge, and the opening of Interstate 485, Steele Creek witnessed astounding growth and development in both commercial and residential areas. Even today, Steele Creek is growing faster than any other community in Mecklenburg County, including a seventy percent boom in population.
