Stay up to date on the Dilworth market
The Charlotte neighborhood of Dilworth was the city’s first streetcar suburb. It was formed by a man named Edward Dilworth Latta in the late 1890s on 250 acres of land southwest of Charlotte before the city limits were expanded. This also included Latta Park, which was designed by Joseph Forsyth Johnson. Dilworth, initially designated as Charlotte’s Eighth Ward, its planning involved a grid pattern similar to Charlotte’s original four wards. The first model of the streetcar was horse and mule-drawn and became the chosen form of transportation for those who didn’t want to go at it on foot. Streetcars had a compelling impact on the original four wards, thus bringing about the birth of Dilworth. Charlotte’s development centered in proximity to Trade and Tryon Streets, the city’s vibrant urban core. On May 18, 1891, the Charlotte Street Railway Company, owned by Latta, began operating. This was two days before the official opening of Dilworth. In 1896, the electric-powered streetcar replaced the mule-drawn model. The Charlotte Electric Railway operated these electric models. This bit of intriguing history is just the beginning of the many reasons to buy a home in Charlotte.
